Home – Tasmania

The recognition of my home as an isle was never apparent when I was young. It is not a picture book island which are so often portrayed as miniature pacific dots, bordered by palm trees and coconuts, found miles from capital cities and modernity.

But the 26th largest island in the world, over 364 kilometres long and 306 kilometres wide, located between 40 degrees south and 43.3 degrees south and surrounded by the Tasman Sea, The Southern Ocean and Bass Strait.

It is an island of paradox, where natural beauty meets modernity, where the definition of small could fill a dictionary and where bright blue skies meet a myriad of colours and idiosyncrasies that lay modestly below the surface.

Tasmania is a place that contains a richness not always recognised, but inspires no less. It is a place for the dreamers and doers, a place filled with strong personalities and conflicts, a place of passion and art, a place of natural beauty and no less a place of hardship, history and overwhelming success. It is unique and why I am a proud to call this Island home.

My Island Home is simply dedicated to showcasing the people and places which make this an incredible place to live. I may do this in various forms, from poetry, prose, essays, musings and random ramblings.

I have recently completed “50 Days” – a project where I write a poem a day, for 50 days. You can find the body of work under the ‘Poetry’ category. Since this work, I have commenced writing a book of Poetry about Tasmania. I am hoping to release this soon so watch this space.

  1. Hello.
Thank you for following me on lifehelps.
Tasmania, a place I haven’t really thought about; I’ll have to read more of your blog and go look it up. It always surprises me when I encounter a place or people that have not been part of my experience.
    Thanks for sharing this place.

  2. Hi Mim, Thank-you for liking my poems, it is exciting to see that you are from my home state. I am a bit of a nomad now but I always come back to Tassie every summer after around 7 months on the mainland. Love your my Island Home page and when I get a chance will be having a good look. cheers Kev

    1. Hello Kev,

Another Islander – fabulous! I am down South in greater Hobart. That sounds an adventurous lifestyle and one very nice way to stay in Summer 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to visit and comment 🙂

    1. Hello Andrea,

Thanks for the clarification. I had tried before but I kept getting “this page doesn’t exist anymore”. There is so much more I could be doing with my blog too, but it means some time sitting down and researching the technology. Ah us Mothers with Kids eh 😛 I love California (ahh blue skies) and your love of books! Look forward to delving into your blog now, all the best, Miriam

  3. I do consider all off the ideas you have offered in your post.
They are really convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are very qick
for starters. Could you please extend them a bit from next time?
    Thanjk you for the post.

  4. Thank you for liking my poem My Place. Reading your blog reminds me that I just wrote and posted a poem about MY island home. It’s called On Kaua’i and just went up on the blog less than ten minutes ago.

  5. Wow…I was in New Zealand for 5 weeks last year and chose not to go to Australia, but it definitely sounds like Tasmania shouldn’t have been missed.

  6. I am another person in love with my island: Kaua’i. So, I totally resonate. Thank you so much for liking my poetry on my blog WordMusic. If you were to visit there again, you would find at least 270 more poems on a wide range of subjects.

  7. When we went to Australia, we went short to visit Tasmania. The goal was going north from Sydney so y husband could dive in Great Barrier Reef. He was born in New South Whale. It’s a wonderful project to write poetry about you hometown and have it published. Best wishes to you! Thanks to stop by!
